Girvan is a small town on the South Ayrshire coast approximately 55miles south
west of Glasgow. It was established by Royal Charter in 1668 and the area has a
rich history. Robert the Bruce held court in Girvan, there are strong associations
with the covenanters, Robert Burns frequented the area, and Keats and
Wordsworth visited and wrote about Ailsa Craig. Girvan’s greatest assets are a full mile of beach and dunes, a jewel of a harbour,
the Carrick Hills, a still-great salmon river and golf courses.
The town is served by rail, that connects us with central Scotland and the north of England. We are very close to P&O and Stena ferry lines to Ireland and to Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, Ryanair's main hub, servicing Europe. Best of all, but just
beyond reach, the awe-inspiring, internationally important, seabird colony of Ailsa
Craig, is just 10 miles offshore. The town has a population of around 7,000 people and is the main service centre for the surrounding rural area of South Carrick, with a further 4,000 population. |
